What Can Be Placed on Reserve?
Library books, personal books, copies of journal articles, book chapters, examinations, and multimedia materials. The library complies with the Copyright Law (Title 17, United States Code). Anthologies and compilations of copyrighted materials cannot be accepted for reserve without prior written permission from the copyright holder. No exceptions to the law will be made.
How Do I Place Materials on Reserve?
For the online forms, you will fill out your contact information, and information about the item you are placing on reserve. In the case of articles and book chapters, you will then be asked to upload the item, in Word, PDF, JPG, GIF, or ZIP format. Size must not exceed 10MB. In the case of books and media items, you must bring the material to the Information Commons Circulation Desk. Library staff will not pull items for reserve.
How Many Copies of Each Item Can I Place on Reserve?
In order to comply with the Fair Use provision of the Copyright Law, Title 17 of the United States Code, the library can accept a single photocopy of a copyrighted work for one semester without written permission of the copyright holder. If additional copies are requested, and copyright permission is obtained, one copy per ten students can be put on reserve, with no more than three copies per item.
How Do I Obtain Copyright Permission?
It is the responsibility of the instructor to apply for copyright permission if needed.
When Should I Submit Reserve Materials?
Reserve lists are processed in the order they are received. Submit lists three weeks prior to the semester to guarantee availability when classes begin. Materials submitted after the start of classes are processed as quickly as possible.
What Are the Loan Periods for Reserve?
You may specify any of the following loan periods for your materials:
2 hours, library use only
2 hours and overnight after 3 p.m.
4 hours, library use only
There is no reserve lending period beyond 7 days
Students are allowed to borrow only three reserve items at one time. Overdue fines are charged if items are returned late.
How Will My Students Identify My Reserve Materials?
Students will find reserve materials by using the library's search box and selecting Course Reserves. Encourage your students to make a printout of the needed items to take with them to the Information Commons Circulation Desk. Please do not give students reading assignments until your reserve list has been processed and materials are available.
When Are Materials Removed from Reserve?
All materials will automatically be removed from reserve at the end of the semester unless a new reserve request form is submitted 2 weeks prior to semester end.
