ALCOHOL AND ILLEGAL DRUG POLICY
An Alternative Break trip is a unique experience that allows participants to immerse themselves in a different community while performing meaningful community service. Issues of legality, liability, personal safety, and group cohesion are of concern when alcohol and other drugs are consumed on an Alternative Break trip. Thus, the Alternative Break program adheres to an alcohol and drug-free policy. This policy prohibits alcohol consumption and/or illegal drug use by anyone, regardless of age, during the entirety of the Alternative Break trip including travel to/from sites and "free" time. At no time, nor under any circumstance are participants, Site Leaders, or staff Trip Advisors permitted to consume alcohol or illegal substances while participating in an Alternative Break trip.
The use, possession, consumption, or purchase of alcohol and/or alcohol related paraphernalia is strictly prohibited for the duration of the Alternative Break trip (departure to return). This includes buying alcohol or alcohol related products (shot glasses, t-shirts, etc.), drinking alcohol, holding alcoholic beverages for another individual, or any sort of situation that would include a SUNY Buffalo State Alternative Break participant, Site Leader, or staff Trip Advisor associating with or portraying alcohol use. This applies to all aforementioned constituents, including those over the age of 21. Additionally, no alcohol is allowed for purchase or transport on domestic or international trips.
ILLEGAL DRUG USE
SUNY Buffalo State has a zero-tolerance policy regarding the possession, use, manufacture, production, sale, exchange, or distribution of illegal drugs (as defined by United States law) by students, Site Leaders, and staff Trip Advisors participating in an Alternative Break trip.
Violation of the Alcohol and Illegal Drugs Policy is grounds for termination from the Alternative Break trip. Termination will result in the participant immediately being sent home at his/her own expense and possible referral to the campus judicial system. Any participant who violates any of these policies also forfeits their right to any and all refunds after returning from the trip and will be prohibited from attending any Alternative Break trips in the future. Support of this policy by all involved parties is essential for a safe and socially aware Alternative Break program.
